Trip Report

South Early Winter Spire/South Arête

South Early Winter Spire/South Arete
June 22, 2014

From Stephen Sugiyama: The party consisted of the climb leader, 2 rope leads, and 5 Basic students.

We left the trailhead at 6:15 a.m. and arrived at the base of the climb at 8:15 a.m. Snow covered most of the approach and we put on crampons once we cleared the trees.

Climbers were belayed up the first pitch and through the chimney; we simul-climbed the rest. We reached the summit around 11:00 a.m. and spent an hour enjoying the pleasant weather and great views. We used three rappels on the descent and were back at the cars at 2:15 p.m.

Gear: Crampons for the approach. Light racks of a half-dozen cams and a few nuts per rope team. We used a 60 m rope on the first pitch and left it at the first anchor for the rappel. We used shorter (30 m and 40 m) ropes for the remainder of the climb.
