We went up the old trail and down the new trail! As described, the old trail is more challenging but overall was still pretty well maintained. There was one very large tree down in the first half mile up the trail which required a "boost" from my hiking partner as it was a bit tall for someone 5'1".
This was Luke Lampe and I's first time up Mailbox Peak! The hike was steep and rooty with snow starting at around 1500ft. We put our micro spikes on half way up and they worked great. The trail was pretty packed down, but the spikes helped on the steeper sections.
Once we cleared the forest section, we felt the pure power of the wind and snow. We continued up to the top but the views were blocked by the weather/clouds. We retreated back to the tree line for a snack and then went down the new trail.
Reached mailbox in 2:04 with snow scramble pack weight.
