Seattle Snowshoe Winter Camping Field Trip - Austin Pass (winter)

Road required chains on or 4wheel drive. High wind, High avi danger,COLD, so- 9am start, camped at Heather Meadows. High wind setting up tents. Wind down so could cook supper. 2 or 3 feet of snow. One cave slept in, 3 built. Morning beautiful, backpacked out 9:30am. Everyone did great. Winter Survival Badge should go to this group.

  • Road had lots of snow.   Avalanche danger HIGH.  Lots of wind and snow.   So, we camped in a safe place without getting into any dangerous areas.   Two or three feet of new snow.

Thursday and Friday two feet of new snow, wind, cold. Saturday and Sunday light wind, sun, clouds, moon light. High 20, Low 18. Left parking lot 10am, snowshoed up to Austin Pass. Set up tents, and worked all day on snow caves. 2 T type, 2 Patrick wall and hole method. 2 feet of new snow on top of layers of ice. Hard digging. One student couldn't get warm all night. 2 students slept in a cave. All had a good night. Nice morning, all had breakfast, broke camp. Class dismissed, backpacked out around 10am. Beautiful,

Snow,wind,cold (20 degrees) thursday and friday. Partly sunny, 20 High, 18 Low Saturday and Sunday. Moonlight. 10am depart parking lot, snowshoe up to Austin Pass. Set up tents, choose cave sights, and start digging till almost dark. 2 T type caves, 2 Patrick wall and hole caves. 2 feet of new snow on top of layers of hard ice. Difficult digging. 2 students slept in a cave. One cave sagged too bad to be safe for sleeping in. One cave just too short. One cave not quite ready. All learned lots. 1 student just could not stay warm, gave advice for a better future experience. Everyone had a good weekend. Sunshine, and little wind make it extra nice. Sunday 10am, class dismissed, backpacked out.
