Sea Kayak - Deception Pass

Great day at the pass, max ebb of 6.2k in the main pass at 2.15 allowed us plenty of time to play and learn skills. Added a circumnavigation of Deception Island on the way back to Bowman Bay, well worth it if conditions allow.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Max ebb of 6.2 knots at 2.15p, water conditions in the pass were as anticipated.

The group discussed goals and expectations before we left Bowman Bay, including reviewing techniques and skills and the PASTA approach to crossing the eddyline.

We arrived at the Pass at slack which allowed us to practice some rolls/rescues before the ebb started. After about an hour we stopped for lunch, then went back for more play until around 2.30pm, after which all participants did a wet exit and paddle float re-entry in the current with Tom and I observing.

On the way back to Bowman we circumnavigated Deception Island which was well worth the paddle.
