Trip Report

Sea Kayak - Case Inlet

Blue skies above, but fog on the water in the morning. Bright cloudless sunny afternoon for this tour of the Case Inlet.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Temperature around freezing in the morning as we prepared to launch.
Fog in the morning as we paddled along the east shore of the inlet.
Sun broke out as we crossed the inlet towards Stretch Point.
Wind was calm in the morning and then came up to about 4-5kt from the south in the early afternoon and died down again be later in the afternoon.

Amazing weather for mid January blessed us for this fun paddle.  We all arrived in time to get on the water very close to the planned time. We launched at 9:35am in fog and crossed over to the east shore of the inlet in low visibility. The fog was thick on the water but above us we could see blue sky.
P1010178.JPGAs we approached the east shore, the sun shining through the fog and trees was quite dramatic.

We paddled south along the shore, stopping to view the petroglyph at Victor. The tide was just right to get good views. This is private property, so you can't get out of the boats to view it on foot, but with the right tide level it's easy to view.

Continuing south along the shore, we explored the shores of Rocky Bay in the fog and then stopped for a break under the high bank of Windy Bluff. The fog was still thick on the water, so we decided to make the crossing to Stretch Point from  the base of the sand spit at the mouth of Vaughn Bay so we could calculate an accurate heading to follow. It was a good navigation exercise that turned out to not be needed. After a short paddle into Vaughn bay, the fog lifted as we paddled out past the spit and we could see  the beach at Stretch Point for our crossing.

After lunch at Stretch Point, we did a counter clockwise circumnavigation of Stretch Island and then paddled inside Reach Island, stopping for a quick break at Grapeview waterfront park. After the break we continued north along the shore, arriving back at the launch at 3:15pm.

Some rolling and rescue practice for equivalency was accomplished by a few as participants packed up. It was a fine day on the water!

Total distance: 12.63nm
Average moving pace: 2.8kt
