Sea Kayak - Anderson Island

Anderson Island circumnavigation from Steilacoom.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • It was a nice plus to have the ferry schedule with me.

It was dark as the 5 of us unloaded boats at the Steilacoom Ferry boat ramp. Cars were moved over to the parking lot ($12.54 payable only by phone). We launched at 8:15, five minutes before the ferry left so there was no problem getting around it. And it turned out to be a foggy day! We could just make out the tip of Ketron Island as we headed to it. The tide was flooding and we briefly hit 5 kts at the north end of Ketron, but that did not last. There was light rain but none of the forecasted south wind. We continued on over to Anderson Island relying on a compass bearing.

We made a quick, unplanned bio stop at Cole Point, ca 9:30, then continued on to the planned stop at Andy’s Marine Park 10:40 – 11am. The fog had mostly cleared, but not completely, as we continued around to Eagle Island, stopping on the south side for lunch, 12:10 – 1pm. The fog still drifted in and out. By now the current had reversed and we got a little assist in Balch’s Passage. Once we reached the ferry terminal we headed back across to the put-in, which we reached about 2:15. Fortunately there was no fog for this 2nd crossing.

Total distance: 15.22nm.
