Trip Report

Sea Kayak - Anderson Island

A classic winter island circumnavigation.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

This trip was originally listed to launch from Luhr boat launch in the Nisqually delta.  The weather forecast leading up to the trip predicted high south winds building throughout the day. A strong south wind can lead to a long crossing into a head wind at the end of the day. It was determined that launching from Steilacoom landing would allow for greater flexibility in approach angle for the final crossing. As well as additional alternatives.

The day of the paddle winds were predicted to blow at a steady 10-18kts with gusts higher.  Conditions at the beach did not indicate this prediction would hold.  After a shore talk discussing the possibility of a long windy day on the water, we held to the modified plan of launching from Steilacoom and doing a clockwise circumnavigation of Anderson.

It should be noted that 18kt winds with strong gusts may make the Anderson to Steilacoom crossing inadvisable. If the predicted winds had held, we likely would not have done the crossing. Fortunately, the ferry landing on Anderson is located at the ideal crossing point and runs fairly frequently. This provides a convenient bailout point if needed. Check the ferry schedule ahead of time if you plan on using it as a backup.

Commencing with the trip we encountered calm conditions, clear water and generally a relaxed and lovely environment. Stopping at the WWT camp site for break and Eagle Island for lunch. After lunch we made the final push to the Anderson ferry landing and determined the current light wind was safe for a crossing back to Steilacoom.  The final leg of the trip was uneventful up until the last 15 min or so when a local dolphin decided to grace us with its presence directly in front of the group.  It appeared to be in no rush, so we took the opportunity to sit back and enjoy a rare close encounter.  Overall a fine day on the water.
