  • Sea Kayaking

May 30, 2015 our trip included six paddlers, 5 experienced and one doing his first student paddle for the Basic Class. We met at the Des Moines Marina near the fishing pier to launch from the dock around 9:30 AM. The plan was to paddle north along the shoreline to Seahurst Park in Burien. Low tide was at 9:58 AM so we were able to use a bit of flow assist for our paddle north. The weather was calm with morning overcast changing to sun in the afternoon. The wind was SW changing to variable of less than 5 knots. Wind waves were less than one foot. We did get occasional ship/boat waves. We had lunch at Seahurst Park and then played and practiced rescues and rolls for quite a while before we headed back. On the return trip we stopped at Normandy Park Beach for a short break and then finished our trip back to the dock. We practiced a bit more near the fishing pier and then unloaded on the dock. Wildlife observed on our trip were bald eagles, heron, various sea birds, a kingfisher diving for fish, and the highlight was a dolphin near Three Tree Point. After the trip, we debriefed at the taco truck on the pier. Everyone enjoyed their day and there were no incidents.
