Trip report , Point Robinson and the East Channel, 2-28-2015

A group of ten experienced paddlers met at Saltwater State Park at about 9AM. The weather was clear, with a north wind at about 15 knots. The tides were higher (6’ low, 10’ high), and the waves were 1-2 ft. Our original plan was to proceed north to DesMoines Creek Park, cross the East Channel to Point Robinson, and cross back to the launch point at Saltwater State Park. With a small craft advisory posted for that area, we decided to stay on the east shore and proceed north into the wind. The goal of this trip was to experience the conditions of wind and waves, and practice other skills such as rescues in those conditions. We proceeded north to Normandy Beach Park, stopping at DesMoines Creek park on the way to look around and use the facilities. After lunch we proceeded west from the shore towards the shipping channel to get more exposure to the wind and practice paddling downwind. We again stopped at DesMoines Creek Park to practice landing and use the facilities. Afterwards we again proceeded west from the shore towards the shipping channel to get more exposure to the wind and practice paddling downwind. We stopped short of the park and practiced assisted rescues and rolling in the conditions. At the park we landed through small breaking waves in the shallow water near the creek. We debriefed at a small restaurant in DesMoines. A good time was had by all and there were no incidents.
