Nisqually River: McKenna to Yelm Hydro Plant
At 1940 CFS a fun level, fairly quick moving. 1200-1500 is probably the sweet spot for this reach with the most fun play spots and clean lines.

The gauge at McKenna was hovering between 1930 to 1940 while we were afloat. About a dozen class II boulder gardens and ledge drops leading up to Big Kahuna. The right side of Log Island was runnable but there is a perfectly horizontal tree about 5 feet overhead that could drop at any time and span the channel. We took the safe route on river left.
We eddied out right just after Log Island to scout Big Kahuna. There are two class III holes that almost certainly would flip a packrafter. We took a conservative line: center >> right >> center >> left, all on green water. All River Left appeared runnable but would be much more technical. Staying center and skirting the big holes also looked like a fun route. We all agreed Little Kahuna was a standard class II wave train. The lower part of the reach is wide and calm. The “Danger Move Left” sign was moot. The fishing dock and hut on the right was gone.
We had a beer at 507 in Yelm afterwards. Great job by Dennis on his assessment trip.
