Trip Report

Mount Spickard/South Ridge & Mount Redoubt/South Face

We climbed Redoubt and Spickard over the July 4th weekend. We followed the TH directions http://images.summitpost.org/original/799403.jpg by Steph Abegg which was accurate. The road to Depot creek TH was pothole heaven as advertised. Our Honda civic made it but a high clearance vehicle would be nice. On the US side, the trail was in fine shape with a few down logs, it was a pleasant hike in an old-grown forest. On the Canadian side, it's a big old road and the forest had been logged. There are ropes at the waterfalls and they were in decent shape. We placed 2 pickets up to the cannonhole due to some ice at the cannonhole but that should melt out with a few warm days. We found two summit registers on Redoubt. 3 short rappels on the decent from Redoubt. Spickard was straightforward with spectacular views. We used crampons and ice axe on the way up but did not rope up. Lake Ouzel is still thawing out. Campsites are melted out with running water. These are 2 very fine scrambles.

Permits: call marblemount ranger station the day before you leave for the permit. No parking permit required at the TH.

Wildlife sightings: over a dozen mountain goats by the camp, owl and black bear on the trail
