12/13/14; 5.2 miles, ~3,000’ gain. The FS#6200 road was in good shape most of the way. We could have driven that last .2 miles to the trailhead on the last switchback, but the road had been just rough and soggy enough to that point that we decided to walk the short distance. We left the cars at 8:35 a.m. The trail was easy to locate and follow, albeit steep! There was just enough snow on the boulder fields to cover them. We followed cairns to the ridge east of the summit and then had to scramble up and around some large rocks before reaching where the normal trail gains the ridge. We had probably been detoured by the trail that traverses over to Index. It just made it more of a scramble than a hike. We were on the summit at 11:25 a.m. where we enjoyed lunch and waited for the clouds to clear enough to see Index, but sadly it never happened. As we dropped down to the small ponds below the summit we met up with two of our folks coming up that we missed due to confusion on meeting times in Monroe. By then the sun was shining so we headed back up to the summit with them and enjoyed amazing views of Index and both ends of a bright rainbow. Some folks donned micro spikes for the descent. We were back to the cars at 3:00 p.m. What a fun day with fun people. Good to finally get out with Tom G too!
