Mount Baker Lower Coleman Glacier & Seracs

June 20-21

We left the trailhead a little after noon on Friday, little snow on the trail until we left the trees, but a couple of creek crossings with dicey snow brides. (much easier on the way back after much melting and saturday foot traffic. Snow past the treeline. Roped up at the hogsback, camped next to the Black Buttes at 7,000 around 430 PM. Some rain on the way up, near freezing over night, clear skies in the morning and all day Saturday. 415 start with hard snow all the way to the summit. Direct route, but evidence of crevasses beginning to open up as low as 7,000 feet. Still snow on the ridge above the saddle. Roman wall was very firm and no boot track, mostly flat footing. Very solid enjoyable pitch, but a little challenging for some newer climbers (several in the party.) Placed 5 pickets for running belay in the upper section. Summit at 1030, descent at 1130, Still very firm on the wall, but crampons off at the saddle and LOTS of significant postholing on the way to camp from Arrived camp at 230, and the snow was much more consolidated from camp to the hogsback. TH around 6. Great trip with near per
