Trip Report

Maple Pass Loop w/ Frisco Peak Attempt

Hit maple pass loop with the first snow fall of the season. The trail was very muddy on the way up with lots of tourists hiking in micro-spikes. The Larches were in full splendor and it seemed like the whole of Seattle had showed up to see them.

  • The trail was muddy/icy and pretty slippery on one side (about 2 miles of it).

We ran the maple pass loop and tried to add on the Frisco summit scramble from the high point. The first two miles of maple pass were deep mud. Some hikers were wearing micro-spikes which may have helped them but also might have been making the mud worse.  A couple miles up it got drier and the trail was more runnable though still heavily trafficked. The run down was in better condition though still muddy and still very crowded. We got about half way over to Frisco on the scramble section and turned around because I didn't have glove and the snow was making my hands a bit too cold for scrambling; also we had already sent some other objectives and weren't tied to getting Frisco. Frisco wasn't in the trip plan and we didn't have any beta about the scramble/approach.  I cannot think of a better time of year to do Maple Pass if you don't mind the crowds. Rainy pass and maple pass were golden with larches and putting on a real show. larches maple pass.jpg
