Trip Report

Lookouts & High Places- Snow Bowl Hut

Lookouts & High Places series started the month of July with a day hike to one of our most favorite local secrets in Ashford, Snow Bowl Ski Hut just outside Mt. Rainier National Park.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Our group of 12 met and parked in Eatonville at the elementary school.

From Eatonville take Hwy 7 east through Elbe towards the town of Ashford. At the Faith Baptist Church turn right and follow the road to across the bridge at the Nisqually and left at the T onto Rd. 1

We then carpooled to the trailhead collecting a lot of dust over a few easy miles of mountain turns.

You will need a Discover Pass for a summer day hike at this winter location.

The hike to Snow Bowl is a fantastic hike to socialize along the wide road that leads to the hut. This hike is steep to begin but levels out eventually with 1400' gain over the first 3 miles.

Once at the hut continue to the gazebo hidden in the back yard 1/8 a mile west. The gazebo is a special place in memory of Judy who had the original vision to create a hut-to-hut ski system at Mt. Tahoma Trails.

In the gazebo you can take a rest or have a picnic outdoors at the two picnic tables. The wildflowers in the gardens are just beginning.

Views of the Goat Rocks, Mt. Adams and Mt. St Helens appear in the background of this lovely spot that is fairly easy to access.

The ski hut is also open during the day. We brought our own water for the trip leaving water for guests of the hut.

7.2 miles out and back with few extra steps wandering the garden of views. 1700' total gain.
