Our group of 6 did the trip to Huntoin Point today. The weather was absolutely perfect and Mt Baker was shining in her glory! We met at the summer road to Artist Point and donned our snowshoes immediately. Did the short trek to Artist Point and sat down for lunch and to take in the awesome scenery. One of our group had brought a probe, so we checked the snow level-it was about 4 feet deep. Crusty, not good for plunge stepping on the way down but snowshoes were definitely needed. The parking lots (mostly snow free) were FULL by the time we got back to our vehicles. A great time was had by all! Side note: Mount Baker Highway is reduced to one lane above Glacier. The rain-swollen Nooksack River eroded the bank below the highway and exposed 90 feet of guardrail posts along the eastbound lane. So the state Department of Transportation closed that lane near milepost 39, about six miles east of Glacier, on Tuesday as a safety precaution while preparing an emergency fix. This did not present a problem on our way up at about 9:30 am and there was just a bit of a delay (10 minutes or so) on our way back down at 4:00.
