Hawk Peak

  • Scrambling

The scramble of Hawk Peak on 5/30/15 provided excellent weather, views and flowers, including the endemic Flett's violet. No snow was encountered. From Silver Lake, we followed a boot path south to the broad saddle, then scrambled up the ridge to the west. For the first 400 vertical feet, the ridge has some exposure and loose rock; most of the time we were below the crest of the ridge, mostly on the south side. On the descent, we followed our ascent route for about 200 vertical feet, then took a boot path into the basin east of the summit. This boot path disappears in a large talus field, which took us most of the way (somewhat tediously) down to the lake. This portion would have been much more pleasant with snow.
