The Barlow Pass parking area elevation is 2,361 feet. After a flat approach of almost 2 miles gaining only 100 feet along the gated Monte Cristo Trail and the beginnings of Weeden Creek Trail, paralleling the Sauk River, the trail turned right and steep. It gained 3,200 feet over the next 3 miles, first through forest and then subalpine rock and heather, on a steep, rugged Class 2 scramble trail with some exposure along the way. We had no trouble crossing the creeks at this time of year. Great views of Sivertip Peak and other Monte Cristo area peaks to the SE. Rain and coldness at Gothic Basin (5,200 feet), with only a small patch of ice present in the basin, wet rocks and muddy trail on the descent. Overall stats, 10.06 miles and 3,200 feet gained, 8.25 hours from start to finish. It was a pleasure hiking with Alex and Rich.
