Trip Report

Global Adventure - Hike the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway

Unforgettable trip - go hiking in the Lofoten Islands! Dramatic jagged peaks rising up from the ocean with endless views. In addition to the mountains, the Lofoten Islands are surrounded by white sand beaches and turquoise waters. You’d almost believe you were somewhere tropical.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Steep, very steep and super-duper steep! The mountains literally rise up out of the sea going from 0ft to 3000-4000ft in only a few miles. All the trails were steeper, muddier and rockier than Cable Line on Tiger Mt or the old trail to Mailbox Peak. Despite this being on-trail hiking, having participants with scrambling experience was a plus.

Here’s a link to the summary and highlights of our hikes:

Accommodation:

Very comfortable and clean. It was nice to stay in cabins with a kitchen and living area – it made spreading out and getting some alone time a lot easier than when staying in hotels.

Food:

If you love seafood, this is the place for you, especially fish! The food was fresh, delicious and plentiful. Try the fish soup, pickled herring and the Kaviar spread for your trail sandwiches.

Must do:

  • Do all the hikes! I wouldn’t have changed a thing about the hiking itinerary.
  • Go kayaking from Svolvaer. You weave through tiny rock islands in the tropical-like seas.
  • Try all the food in the breakfast buffets, including the pickled herring.
  • Take a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) ride. The boat ride up the Trollfjord was incredible – we saw at least a dozen eagles and got a great perspective of the landscape from the ocean.
  • Stay in the Trollfjordenhytta (mountain hut). The hut’s surroundings are gorgeous, with lots of chances to explore around.
  • Stay in the Solsiden Robruer in Svolvaer, in the XL cabins. We had our own private sauna, and they’re right on the water.

Logistics etc:

  • It’s very easy to get around. The roads are quiet, and drivers are cautious and courteous.
  • Everyone speaks English.
  • No cash needed. Everywhere, they take credit cards or tap to pay via your cell phone.
