Glacier Climb - Whitman Crest/Fryingpan Glacier

Successful climb of Whitman Crest via Frying pan glacier

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail clear to summerland. We reached the snowline on the slope below meany crest. Leftover from the storm last week, patchy soft snow on boulders made for challenging scrambling and descent. The glacier was covered with newish snow, which allowed for easy travel without the need for crampons. Two large crevasses were visible directly below the summit block and were easily avoided.

We managed to avoid beautiful fall weather which occurred on the days before and after our climb. Instead, we experienced on/off drizzle throughout the day. High clouds allowed occasional views  early on, but it became quite socked in after 11am. We summitted in whiteout conditions, which did not relent until we were below summerland.

13.5 hours car to car at easy pace.
