Trip Report

Gilbert Peak/Klickton Divide

7/24-7/25/15
Day 1 Drive to Conrad Meadows, ~ 3.5 hrs from Tacoma. Hike to Warm Lake via Surprise Lake. Cut off at drainage coming from basin just N of Warm Lake, requiring some scrambling with full packs. Mild beautiful day. No mosquitos!
Day 2 Low visibility, wind, and intermittent light rain. 3.5 hrs to summit with frequent navigation checks. Summit block scambleable even with wet rock. 2:15 back to camp. Group elected to break camp and hike out instead of stay 2nd night as planned. Followed boot path, faint at times, N along headwall below Warm Lake until meeting unmaintained trail that leads to Conrad Creek/Cold Lake. Took game trail left instead of descending a bit further right as grade lessens ~5700' at base of headwall. Extensive game trails eventually petered out, and we discovered the USGS marked trail no longer exists, but has been routed lower for horses. Completed clockwise loop on trial #1120, longer than on map due to gentle horse grade. Some apparent boot trail cutoffs might save time on this. An experienced group with excellent navigation skills were instrumental in making this an excellent trip despite some of the first inauspicious weather in months. No ice axe are needed for this trip when snow is gone, as it was in this very low snow year.
