Field Trip - Pinnacle Peak & The Castle (Winter)

Changed from Rainier to Yodelin, no gate opening all weekend at Rainier

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Arrived Yodelin parking lot 8:45, booted up, skins on and waxed, all shortly before ski area started using as overflow parking. A couple of other BC skiers arrived shortly after us.

Phenomenal boot deep powder skiing

Still a bit of slide alder showing on initial approach, turned left across the flats with the intent of a loop return down the road.  Lots of trail breaking and route-finding exercises for this student activity of the outing. Ascended the Burn and skied incredible boot deep snow, returned to the saddle and then a fun thousand-foot descent towards Mill Creek. Ascended to SW of point 5023, upon transitioning and skiing what we thought was towards the parking lot, quickly realized a wrong turn had been made and we were returning to Mill Creek. Corrected our error, once again skinning up to the ridge and correctly ascended to the parking lot completing our loop. With all our techniques that we practiced for this class, it was a fun 9-hour day of touring. A lot of great learning by all.
