Trip Report

Dumbell & Greenwood Mountains

9/21/2014
Nice climb, easy routefinding. Started at trailhead 3:30pm, set up camp around 5,300' where there are several good campsites in the woods just below the upper basin. Not many good flat campsites higher. Next morning headed out 6:30am, made the mistake of heading up right of main creek and subsequent large gully. Best route is to stay left of main creek until footpath crosses, then stay just right of main creek, do not cross big washed out gully, follow footpath right of creek and left of small trees to head of basin. Eventually we came to huge washed out gully (very obvious this is the route) at head of basin to the right, crossed over and climbed left side of gully for a few hundred feet, then crossed over to the right side, easy hiking and scrambling to the scree field, continued up the scree and boulder field until just underneath face of Dumbell. Headed left to get above lower cliffbands. Can take any route that looks doable through the upper cliff bands, further to the left the easier it gets, down to class 2. Followed ledges with some scrambling to notch just below Dumbell, follow scramble paths just left of ridge crest to summit, 11:00am. Scrambled down the way we came, then headed over to Greenwood, narrow path is easy to find, again head up to just underneath face of Dumbell, loose scrambling to round the corner on right side, follow path around to NE side of Dumbell, descend snowfield or scree to gain face of Greenwood, hop boulders and gain broad shoulder of Greenwood, hike to summit, 12:15pm. Back to camp 3:00pm, cars at 6:15pm.
