Trip Report

Dragontail Peak/Colchuck Col

Dragontail Peak West Route, down Asgard Pass. Trip date 6/26/2016.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Some rockfall was encountered on the upper part of Colchuck Glacier. Avoided snow covered creek going down Asgard Pass.

Started at Stewart Lake TH at 5:45AM and arrived at the lower glacier at 8AM. Colchuck Glacier's "east lobe" was icy and firm with no crevasses. Arrived at Col and turned left (East) and ascended to the notch via the couloir. The snow was firm in the couloir and self belayed to the notch. The notch was covered in snow and descent route down the other side was covered in snow as well. I saw several cordalettes  at the top of the notch which may have been used for protection for a repel or  for a running belay per other trip reports.  We descended back down the couloir 30-50 feet where we found an area to scramble up over the ridge (Easy 3/4th class) to avoid the steep snow decent from the notch. Per the ascent description: Alternatively, about 30 ft below Pandora's Box, exit left and scramble up 4th class rock about 20 ft, then follow the ridge line left. After we gained access to the ridge line the route was pretty straight forward; followed the ridge and made the summit by 12PM. Descended via Asgard Pass which had patches of snow on the upper portions. Made it back to the TH at 5:15.
