Trip Report
Day Hike - West Tiger Mountain 1-2-3
Annual Tiger Mountain Random Walk where we randomly ( or arbitrarily) chose which direction to go at each intersection. After a couple of hours, we pulled out our maps and used them to figure out our position, then navigated back to the trailhead.

Foggy at lower elevation, sunny near Tiger summits. It rained the previous day so the trail was wet and occasionally slick.
Parking lot wasn’t full when we started or finished, but many cars parked out on road, so it may have been full mid day.
We started with introductions and a review of the planned agenda. I explained that the goal was to randomly choose a direction at each intersection so that our route could be a surprise to everyone. This is to allow for a sense of exploration in a familiar place. Participants were encouraged (but not required ) to keep their maps and compasses put away during the first half of the hike. I tracked our progress via GPS as a safety backup. We took turns selecting the route at each intersection. I encouraged everyone to choose randomly on their turn, but most participants elected to choose “arbitrarily”.
Our route used the Nook trail, RR Grade trail, Section line trail and Seattle View trail. Near the top of the Seattle View Trail, we stopped and practiced using our maps, along with compasses and local observations to pinpoint our location. After some discussion, the group decided to return by hiking to the Tiger 3 summit and returning via the main Tiger 3 trail.
