Trip Report

Day Hike - Umtanum Ridge

Wildflowers put on a good show! Steep trail, especially near the peak. Windy up on the ridge. Trail in good condition.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

Lots of different wildflowers in full bloom!

This is a beautiful trail starting with the suspension bridge across the river and the rock formations on the canyon walls. The trail climbs and climbs and climbs and the views get better and better and better. This is the perfect time of year for wildflowers. They were wonderful. Most are at their prime, and some are just starting to bud and will be popping in another week or two. So you still have time to come see the show. The Vista trail is very steep near the peak, so be careful of your footing. We traveled along the road westward for half a mile to the true local peak of 3,600 ft. It was windy and cold at the top of the ridge when a light rain storm blew through briefly. Fortunately, in true Mountaineers fashion, everyone was prepared with extra layers. Trail remained in good condition and was bone dry. Many more people on the trail in the afternoon as we were descending. It became challenging in some places to step off trail to allow them to pass. Without trampling the flowers.

Two vault toilets in the parking lot; no running water, so be sure to bring plenty.

6.3 miles in 3 hr 55 min (including stops). Still plenty of space in the parking lot at the end of the day.
