Trip Report

Day Hike - Tiger 1

9 of us made a giant "choose-your-own adventure" loop: Poo Poo up to Hidden Forest/One-View to Poo Top, W. Tiger 1 and 3, down the TMT and back for 10.5 miles and just under 3000 gain to beat the rain.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • NOTE: If you're planning on visiting the west side of Tiger this Thanksgiving morning (2025), be aware that Front Street is going to be closed off from 8-noon, perhaps for a fun run or parade.

Our route took us up to the launch area (where nobody was launching that early), through the Hidden Forest (One-View Trail), up to Poo Top in order to access West Tiger 1, over to Tiger 2 and West Tiger 3 summit, and down the unmaintained upper reaches of Section to take us south on Tiger Mountain Trail so we could return to Poo Poo Point and continue back down to the parking lot.

Latrines all have toilet paper and are still open for the winter; at the paraglider area, use Portapotties at the south end of the parking lot.

The trail we took is, for the most part, in great shape. Several areas of note:

    1. Any wood bridges -- best to stay on the grates or the leaves, as that wood is SLICK this time of year in all the recent rains, and with cold temperatures the threat of frost and black ice forming is high.
    2. Muddy areas - we tried our best to stay on the trail (look for rocks as stepping stones) vs. widening in places.

    4. TMT - the westernmost portion we were on has significant ups and downs with a few blow-downs in spots. It looks about like it did a few years ago when I last did this route, but with running water it can be a little more treacherous going across the rocks.
    5. When you get onto One-View Trail, the going gets tougher -- some big dislodged root balls from last year's bomb cyclone that requires some clambering over. But Poo Poo is totally clear, and even the upper reaches of Section is in good shape, albeit a little slick with the rain.

    7. (aack, can't get rid of auto-numbering sorry) I collected 6 dog poop bags, a discarded water bottle, someone's missing glove, and a few other pieces of trash but really, for such heavily used trails, I consider this pretty good (sadly).

9 of us enjoyed a pre-Thanksgiving hike on Tiger this morning between showers, a giant "choose your own adventure" loop that clocked us 10.5-ish miles and about 3000' of elevation gain. We left the paraglider field (Poo Poo Point parking lot) at 7 a.m. and returned just before 1:30.

We were lucky; the forecast was for rain starting around 10 AM, but the sprinkles held off until about 1 PM. Mid to upper 30's at the start, comfortable 40s on our way down.

We had some breezes that kept us moving, and a dusting of snow up high, but you have to look really hard for it. The northerly Cascades, however, look like they could have quite a bit.

Fall colors are past their prime, but we did see a few Maidenhair ferns, mushrooms, and we had 11 bird species including a hairy woodpecker, a few northern flickers, and some brown creepers among them.

We had a great group of hardy souls and lots of good conversation.  No paragliders, some trail runners, a dog or two and some hikers but not nearly as many as I would have expected. Thankful for the trash can at the north end of the parking lot so I didn't have to cart the smelly trash home.
