Trip Report

Day Hike - Tatoosh Peak

A beautiful, cool, Fall day to this Rainier 100 peak with great views

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail in great shape for 2 miles.  The next mile is a bit chunky.   Overall the trail is mostly in good condition with a few rougher spots.

The 7 miles of gravel dirt road is not too bad of shape. A few bigger potholes but avoidable if driving carefully.

The day was predicted as sunny with a high of 49 degrees. I was a little worried because I monitored Mt. Rainer web cams on Saturday and the clouds never cleared. We met at Whittakers at 6:45am, consolidated cars and drove to the trailhead.  We were hiking by 8:00AM.

We eased into the climb, not overdoing it, making 3 miles and 2700’ in 2 hours.  After a 10 minute break we continued toward Tatoosh Peak where we took a solid 30 min break. It was a little chilly and the Mountain had become obscured by clouds. Our only other stops were the typical layer adjustments, quick snacks, photos, etc  They were all brief.

We got a great view of Rainier on the way out.  It was a bit hazy and some clouds to the south so we saw St Helens at times, and Adams barely.

Great views of the Tatoosh Range from the summit

The group discussed the option to visit Tatoosh Lake but we had a consensus to get headed home early instead.
