Day Hike - Scorpion Mountain

A less popular, but rewarding, trail off the Beckler River road in the Route 2 area.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  •  Access was by F.S. road 6520 up Johnson Ridge from the Beckler River road; the road was smooth for a Forest Service Road.  It took 2 hours to get from the Brickyard P&R to trailhead. On a Friday one car was parked there on our arrival. Parking was along the side of the road, after a tight turn around at the trailhead. The trail started out a bit stony but got better and better as we proceeded.

A meadow with views on Sunrise Mountain, about halfway to the summit, invited a rest stop both outward and inward bound. We followed the left-hand branch as the trail split just before the summit of Scorpion Mountain. The summit offered sitting opportunities with expansive views of the surrounding Cascades.  On our return we encountered three parties going in to fish at Joan Lake.

In 6 1/2 hours we  gained 2,300' of elevation over 8 miles of travel.
