Trip Report

Day Hike - Poo Poo Point via High School Trail

On a windy, wet morning, ten of us cheerfully braved the mud for a white-out trip up to Poo Poo via High School and were surprised by the number of other brave souls out on the morning of Daylight Savings adjustment.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • This had to be the wettest and windiest hike I've done in over 15 months. A good test of gear (fourth coat I've tested; none are completely waterproof), with a great group of high-spirited hikers.

Muddy doesn't begin to describe it. And it seemed to get worse as the day went on. I barely noticed it on the way up from High School Trail/guns access (winds were higher going up, they died down as the rain came in) but descending it was slick.

The gun range parking area was new to me, but much of the trail was familiar up to Poo Poo Point. No view to speak of at the summit, just windy.

10 of us met at the Gun Range to depart at 8:12 AM (new Daylight Savings time) and returned to the cars by 11:30 AM. We had an average 2.4 mph moving pace to the windy summit (no hang gliders today) in just under 3 hours with 15 minutes to grab a pit stop and some snacks.

Grateful for the restrooms at Poo Poo as there isn't a facility at the Gun Range. I collected a discarded dog poop bag and a few pieces of other trash; it would be a good idea to have a receptacle available somewhere at the TH to minimize discarded garbage.

This was a mentored lead for V who did a wonderful job despite high winds in the forecast and a group that included five brand-new Mountaineers members (Welcome!!) So nice to shepard in new participants.

On the day we heard or saw 12 bird species including Pacific wrens, towhees, an unidentified woodpecker drumming in the distance, and varied thrushes, one of my favorite birds. The wind and rain made it harder to see or hear them but spring migration is a few weeks away!

Other than a few issues with fueling and gear management, everyone did great. Plus we had most of the afternoon for other things. Congratulations on his successful mentored lead and looking forward to what he does next.
