Day Hike - Noble Knob
Moderately easy hike to former lookout. IMO wildflower & butterfly abundance & variety rivals anywhere at Mt Rainier NP without the hassle of timed entry. Corral Pass Rd can be accomplished with good tires & an SUV.

Corral Pass Road - This morning, the Ranger at Enumclaw said, "...a sedan could make it..." but that's hard to believe. There's evidence of recent grading, repair and clearing of the road. No washerboard surfaces but still a very bumpy ride on this rough road. The areas of repair involved use of large broken rock, some with sharp edges. Standard city street tires would take a beating on this road. Shoulders are very soft & would be hazardous to get your tires into one (may not get out). For the steep sections, low gear is needed to get traction. Many double-fist sized rocks on the road, mostly easy to drive around. The 2 vehicles we drove to the TH did not have difficulty (Mazda CX-5 with 7" ground clearance and similar SUV). It was about a 30 minute drive.
Noble Knob trail - From Corral Pass TH to Mutton Mountain viewpoint, little or no overhead cover. Sun was intense. The Noble Knob trail from Corral Pass TH is debris free, just dusty. Plenty of parking both near the TH and at the Corral Pass campground which is nearby. There's a nice vault toilet next to the Corral Pass campground parking lot. From TH to Mutton Mountain viewpoint, Mt Rainier is continually in view. After that the trail goes in and out of tree cover.
So many wildflowers! On one trail section in the burned area, the hillside was abloom with masses of Arrowroot Buckwheat which filled the air with their wonderful fragrance. Continuous showcase of wildflowers and butterflies all the way to Noble Knob. The 80º-ish temperatures might have been tough on us hikers but the butterflies and wildflowers clearly flourished with it.
Picture of fluorescent pink Rock Beardtongue, everyone's favorite today.
Our happy group on Noble Knob.
