Trip Report

Day hike / Naturalist Saint Edward State Park

My dog and I encountered 26 bird species on a 2.6 mile / 422' perimeter walk down the North Ridge and up the South Ridge. For optimal birding, I recommend going at dawn; there's so much manmade noise mid-day that it hinders the enjoyment of the birdsong.

  • My dog and I hiked 2.6 miles along the park perimeter, 420' elevation down St. Edward State Park's north ridge and regained it up the south ridge, then around east trails to loop back to the car. Don't forget your Discover Pass!

The trail is muddy in places, particularly along the waterfront where some cones mark off eroded areas being restored.  There weren't many people on the trails, but several school groups were using the playfields and playground.

On the morning (1055 a.m. / 77 minutes), we had 26 bird species, including a barred owl, a few double-crested cormorants, and some common mergansers resting in the water.

Unfortunately, there were lots of mechanized sounds (noise pollution) between 11-noon, so my best recommendation for anyone wanting solitude and birdsong is to go at dawn before man turns on the noisemakers.
