Trip Report

Day Hike - Mount Walker

Mount Walker pre-game Super Bowl Sunday! The 6" or so of snow was well packed down by this Sunday. Donned Micro Spikes but could have gone on without them. Beautiful Day. More dogs than people on the trail today. Getting them exercised before the game, I'd imagine.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Route was in a fine winter condition. Nice cool February walk. The parking area had a berm from a snow plow that required kicking the truck into 4-wheel drive. No problem. I suspect it's gone by now.

Sunday was your typical bad weather report, beautiful day when you get out in it. We elected for a later start, arriving at the gate at 0930 so as to not drive in dark, icy conditions. We started out with micro-spikes and an easy pace. I posted this as a conditioner so we discussed FOTH 10th edition and the chapters on conditioning and nutrition. One participant is from Olympia so I pointed out eating areas like the Half-Way House in Brinnon (owned by a fellow SAR member), Hama Hama Seafoods (besides the Oysters they make a great grilled cheese sandwich, which goes well with a bowl of chowder), and on down to the Hoodsport coffee which has great coffee, sandwiches, and Ice Cream.

Another participant was from Bainbridge Island so he and I stopped at Finn River Cidery for pizza and a hot apple cider.

There were a 1/2 dozen other people on the trail that I knew so quite a nice day.
