Day Hike - Mount Rose
After a long stretch of wet days in the region we were greeted with perfect weather. The last mile before the summit became a winter wonderland. The views were mesmerizing as we stood above clouds in awe of a panoramic view of snowy peaks, Lake Cushman, Hood Canal, and Mt. Rainier in the distance.

The trail was dry and well maintained up until just below horse camp. At approximately 2800 feet the trail was covered in snow and micro spikes became a helpful tool for maintaining good footing. Micro spikes were adequate beyond horse camp but as we gained elevation the depth and consistency of the snow changed dramatically. With a foot of new snow falling in the previous 72 hours the snow was waist deep in many places. Small trees and stumps completely covered in snow took on interestingly odd shapes. Navigation was easy most of the time by simply following a well traveled boot path through the snow but there was one spot that was less traveled as other parties were turning around due to the depth of the snow. A quick consult with the GPS track to ensure we remained on the route did the trick and we pressed on.
The most dificult section was definately the last 300 feet below the summit. The snow was deep and was beginning to soften from the southern exposure and early spring sunshine. This made for both a challenging ascent and descent.
Our group was a mix of hikers, scramblers and climbers. Some carrying over 40lbs training for more challenging objectives to come this season. Although the weather was perfect, the mountain made us work for the rewarding summit view that awaited.

Our large group of nine all made the summit in just under 3 hours. This included only a few short breaks, transitions, and gear adjustements. At the summit we had to carefully guard our snacks from bold opertunistic birds perched on the snowy trees above.

After spending about 30 minutes on the summit we carefully made our way down the steep slippery snow on snowshoes. By 11am the snow was getting wet and slippery making the descent on steep snow a bit of challenge. Once we got down off the steep section we coasted back passing many other hikers on the descent.
We returned to our cars and a full parking lot about 1:30PM. After a quick debrief we all headed home thankful for the weather and our snowshoes.
