Day Hike - Mount Peak

Short, but fun close-in hike got us warmed up for summer adventures!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • All stretches of trail we took were in great shape, no obstacles.  A sign at the southern trailhead says the Cal Magnusson trail (north end) is closed, but it IS open, and the upper junction to it is not blocked. We did a counter-clockwise loop from the south, over the top, and continued down to the north trailhead. The previous washout has been repaired; it's back to the way it was and passing it is safe. We took the "Peak Trail" on the western slope back to the cars.

Our route up from the south was via the Rainier Trail (name according to gaiagps) along the eastern side. The final hundred feet or more is very steep, rocky, not maintained, and could be a falling hazard for inexperienced hikers - especially going downhill. The Cal Magnusson trail is quite steep, but maintained.

Our summit at the lookout tower was clouded in, but we were able to see Seattle way off in the distance below the clouds. It was a busy day with many families, kids, dogs, and a few mosquitoes - they're coming out! The trails never really felt crowded though, and people were in good spirits! Our round trip time was just about 4 hours including breaks with 2,140' elevation gain. Again, a fun day out with sunshine on our descent!
