Trip Report

Day Hike - Mount Peak

Enjoyed exploring the south side of this "geological knob" while getting a good workout!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • All the trails we took were well maintained, although quite muddy here and there. No obstacles. There are many junctions, but several new wood signs that clearly point the way were welcome sights. Thank you King County Parks trail crews!

The south trailhead parking area is quite large and there are clean, well kept restrooms. As planned, we found our way from the south up to the new hiker-friendly lookout, then descended the north side by way of the steeper Cal Magnusson trail, then hiked up that trail to the lookout again and had lunch. We descended on an even steeper in places trail on the south side (we did not go near the Goat trail - I've done it and it's somewhat scrambly). Parking areas on both sides were pretty crowded, but the trails did not seem very crowded. We joked that maybe they were all on the Goat trail!  It was chilly and cloudy all day with a brief sprinkle of snow on our second summit. A fun hike on turf that was new to some of my adventurous group! Total 5.5 miles and 2,150' gain over four hours, well worth it!
