Day Hike - Monte Cristo

Great trip with a great set of hikers to a great location.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The trail from Barlow Pass to the river log crossing is in good condition.  The log crossing across the Sauk River is manageable.  There is about a 4 foot drop to the river rocks after crossing to the river to continue the trail to Monte Cristo.  An option to the log crossing is to turn left before the outhouse and get your boots wet and cross the river which was not very deep (mid-calf if you step in a hole) and not too cold.  There are a few small trees across the trail which can easily be stepped over and gone-under.

Arrived at Barlow Pass shortly after 9:00AM and the parking area on the road was full so had to park in the upper parking lot which was half-full.  Began the hike around 9:30AM and arrived at Monte Cristo around 12:00PM.  After lunch the group explored the town site.  Departed Monte Cristo around 12:15PM and arrived back at the parking lot around 4:30PM.  Instead of the log crossing, some hikers elected to cross the river and get their boots wet.
