Day Hike - Lower Big Quilcene

Hike along the Lower Big Quilcene trail to Bark Shanty with a short side trip on the Notch Pass trail.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • There were 3 stream crossing in the first 3/4 mile that weren't bad but required ones attention not to get ones hiking boots too wet. At about 1 mile there was a tree down across the trail but is easily navigated around. Otherwise the trail is in great condition and no snow on the trail at least up to just past Bark Shanty.

Starting from the west side of the Notch Pass trail the first bridge at about 1/2 mile was damaged. With some ice on the bridge we did not attempt to cross.

Fun winter day hike to Bark Shanty and then about 1/2 on the Notch Pass trail. Temperatures were in the low thirties with plenty of views of snow in the higher elevations. Lots of water coming down the river. A few flakes of snow were coming down but not enough to get wet.

We hike about 6.5 miles with 912 feet of elevation gain. The trail overall was in great shape.
