Trip Report

Day Hike - Kendall Katwalk

Our group of ten hikers enjoyed a stunning PNW fall day as we made our way to and from the Kendall Katwalk. This day hike is part of our summer hiking series, Lookouts and High Places and was the final hike needed for several of our participants today.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • This trail is part of the Pacific Crest Trail and has had much use this year. The trail was in great condition. There are many areas where you are hiking over old rock slides but the path is well trodden.

We met at the trailhead at 8:00am and found the parking lot to be a bit busier than expected. But then again, this was a Saturday with a great weather window. There is an overflow lot which none of us needed to use. The privy was very clean and well stocked with tp.

The first part of the trail travels through a lovely old growth forest and we came across several lightly flowing streams in the first 3 miles. We enjoyed watching many Douglas Squirrels chasing each other as they were defending their winter preparations. As we traveled through the first rock field we heard many pikas and caught a glimpse of several which is always worth a stop. Who doesn't love a pika?!

Our group traveled well together and enjoyed each other's company the whole day. We had one hiker have a possible twisted ankle scare and we all came up along side them in support. Giving them time to refocus, breath, assess and decide if they could keep going. It was decided that their ankle was okay and it was more of a scare because they changed the typed of shoe they were wearing for today's hike. They competed the hike with no injury and a big smile.

The fall colors are beginning with the vine maple, huckleberry and Sitka mountain ash glowing with color. We also had some delicious berry picking stops and were actually surprised how many berries were left.

IMG_2221.jpegWe had many trail runners sharing the trail with us today and folks hiking with dogs. Everyone was polite and respectful of hiker right-a-ways. There are still Pacific Crest Trail thru hikers heading north and we enjoyed wishing a great finish.

IMG_2234.jpegSmokey haze was visible and at times we smelled it, but it didn't impact our ability to make our way up to the Kendall Katwalk. Lunch was enjoyed in some shade and several folks walked a bit more north to enjoy the views and stunning day.

Heading back down, we found less smoke and many hikers still venturing up. The hike back was enjoyable but definitely as we neared the 12.5 mile mark folks were ready to be done. We cheered for our Lookout and High Places graduates with a trekking pole arch adding more joy to our day together.
