Day Hike - Kautz Creek

Late-fall attempt to reach Indian Henry's Hunting Grounds

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail is in good shape but snow starts at 3700' and by 4500' is 2-3 feet in depth.  You will need to use a map or GPS to stay on the trail beyond about 4000'.

Post-turkey day calorie burn turned around by snow at 5050'. Trail is in good shape and snow free up to about 3600' where the snow starts.  Only a little snow on the trail to about 4000' where it begins in earnest. Party of three was ahead of us, but we were semi-breaking trail and post-holing so progress was slowed and we elected to turn around at 5050' because of the snow and limited daylight. The weather was quite nice for late November, it did not rain, the sun made a few brief appearances and the snow was lovely.  Warmed up later in the day (40s) and the trees were dropping bombs, the snow was really watery.
