Day Hike - Deer Creek Falls to Owyhigh Lakes

Day hike from the Hwy 123 trailhead to Owhigh lakes.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Drive to the trailhead was on paved highway the entire way.  There is limited parking for maybe 8-10 cars total.

The entire day was grey and overcast.   We started the hike at 7:30am.  The trail was in overall good shape until approximately 4k' elevation. From there to 5,200' there was a total of 25 blow downs, some requiring significant effort to get around.

We ran into snow patches at 4,800' and continuous snow about 1/3 mile from the lakes.  It was also in this area that the group spotted 3 black bears 50-60 yards off of the trail.

We had an early lunch at 5,100' and returned to the cars at 1:30pm.  9.1 miles round trip with 2,400' gain.
