Day Hike - Crystal Lakes (Mount Rainier)

Good trail, few bugs by lake. Smoky air until near upper lake where breeze took it away. Take plenty of water if it's a hot day or hiking later in the day.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Parking lot, both sides of the road were full at 11 am, just enough room for about 3 cars. I recommend backing in if safe to do so. This was mid week so be prepared for heavy use on the trail.

We met and carpooled from the ranger station. Ranger station was actually open and has one restroom for visitors.

Trail was in good shape but dusty. Lots of wild flowers around the 2.2 miles in when you leave the forest. Blue aster, mouse on a stick, paint brush, pearly everlasting. Lots of butterflies and dragon flies at the lake.

Trail is a steady  but not too steep grade up.

As usual be prepared for heavy traffic in Buckley by Mud Mountain Dam.

This is a great hike for a lake destination. The option is a key exchange with someone else who starts at Sourdough gap trail head.
