We arrived at 8:40 to find about ten cars already parked along the road. My last visit there was four years ago with only one or two other vehicles, a non-existent trail to the South Summit of South Tiger, and a bit of a brush bash to the North Summit of South Tiger. I did not know how much work had been done since then - but it was a lot! A great number of trees have been cleared since then. I was also thrilled to have nice trails take us completely around South Tiger and to both summits. Some stretches follow gravelly roads, but most of the route is trail. All fallen trees have been cleared, some quite large. A few short muddy stretches were easily handled. I was surprised to find a couple of small running streams, but later in summer they might be gone. When we returned to our cars at the end, I counted over two dozen vehicles parked along the road, but it did not feel a bit crowded on the trails. Note that there are no restrooms anywhere along the route.
This trip turned out to be quite pleasant. This area feels a little more wild than the northern Tigers, even being close to civilization. There is an abundance of tall trees with lots of lush green growth, although some areas could use trimming along the edges. Some Trillium flowers were out, and a bonus: no bugs!
We hiked counter-clockwise and hit the North Summit first. But it has no views, so we continued to the South Summit where, thanks to clearcuts, the view opened wide and we enjoyed lunch before our descent. The best views are heading south from the South Summit. Four years ago, getting there required thrashing through logging debris, but no more! Thank you to who ever did all that hard work!
Total hike time was a little over 5 hours with 8.2 miles rt and 1,520' gain.
