Day Hike - 1000 Road & Mount Rainier View Loops

This is about 8.22 miles if you take the Trail of the Giants loop. Mainly forest roads.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Please download a map on your app of choice before going. A few trails are well marked like Hugo Peak but others are not. We ran into people in the parking lot wanting to know how to get to Little Mashal falls!

Mainly there are forest roads that have an occasional car/truck. We encountered a few runners, hikers and a search and rescue group out scouting.

No toilet paper in the trail head port a potty, and port a potty is removed at the Hugo Peak 4 way intersection below the peak. Note at trail head said some bear sightings in the area, we saw old scat but no bears.

Some evidence of logging below the view point, so if you take the short cut trail up to viewpoint the road has been logged.

I recommend starting early in the summer. Our group started at 8 kept a 2.1 average pace and with generous lunch break were back by 12:30.

No parking permit is required however they do want you to clear out at dusk and may close a gate.

If Rainer is too crowded this is a good optional hike for a workout, minimal view. The Nisqually park has ongoing road repair, they are adding a round a bout and the state park below it (good for restroom break) is closed. Auto timed red light changes every 4 minutes. Pretty efficient.

It's past wildflower season, but we saw some ghost pipe on the Trail of the giants.

Good footing so you can keep a steady pace. Early shade, Sun at the view point. IMG_0152.jpg
