Trip Report

Colchuck Peak/North Buttress Couloir

We made camp at Lake Colchuck and started out at 5:00 am on Sunday morning. We noticed some snow coming down the NBC as soon as the sun hit it, but it only lasted for about 10 minutes. The route was in great shape. We used pickets and some rock gear to .75 inches to protect the route. The west face was in good shape, but sketchy. As the snow gets thinner it will probably get more dangerous. There are some places for rock pro, but not a lot. Once we got to the ridge there were two obvious ways to go. We went right and it worked great. Then we traversed around to the arête. We descended the Colchuck glacier and back to camp. We made it back to the car at 8:00 pm for a long day. I would recommend staying off the lake. There were people walking and skiing on it, but people were post holing through the ice in the afternoon.
