Trip Report

CHS 2 Hike - West Tiger Mountain 1 & 2

Beautiful morning outing for 4 CHS-2 students that included a few western flycatchers (among 18 bird species), maidenhair ferns, and two deer. Clear views of Rainier and Baker from a very clean Hiker's Hut. Didn't know there were electrical outlets inside!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • No facilities at the High Point gate; we used the ones at the parking lot - well-stocked with TP and someone had covered over a bunch of graffiti.

The trail (trails - we were on quite a few segments!!) is generally in good condition -- water running in all streams. We encountered a few muddy spots near the bottom and a few very dry, "cobble" areas near the top that can be a little slick. At one point we all used at least one pole or stick for improved footing.

6 of us headed up from High Point Trailhead at 7:10 and kept a 2.2 mph pace to Tiger 1 where we took a 20-minute snack break at the Hiker's Hut.

I broke trail against spiderwebs the whole way up and we only spotted 7 people all morning -- though at noon when we stopped to use the facilities the parking lot was about 1/4 full with Tiger 3-hikers. The mountain was surprisingly sparse for such a lovely May Tuesday.

Great views of Rainier and Baker, Puget Sound, and the Olympics. We saw a few deer, heard our first western flycatcher of the season, along with 17 other species including Pacific wrens gracing us with their songs.

Fortunately, we were back down in the forest before the sun and unseasonably warm temps could bake us. Our assistant leader brought some ice-cold drinks to share at the cars in the shade at noon. A lovely outing with fun hikers. Let's do it again!!
