CHS 2 Hike - Kendall Katwalk

Successful mid-week hike with good weather and few hikers.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

A Wednesday hike which started around 8:00 AM with four CHS 2 hikers.  Parking lot had plenty of spaces available and the weather was great, a blue-bird day.  There were not as many hikers on the trail as expected or had been experienced as in the past.  The trail was well maintained and we ascended rather quickly.

Nearing the summit block we began experiencing hints of smoke in the air from the Bear Gulch Fire.  The Bear Gulch Fire was near Mt Rose in the Olympic NF.  At The Cut, I checked the national AQI website and the model reflected a reading of less than 50 and was within the green zone.  However, one hiker stated they had a headache, one stated they they didn't feel safe, and a third suggested we begin our descent.

During our lunch, a hiker group decision was made to revise our planned hike.  Citing health and safety, we decided to return to the TH rather than continue.  We did not experience any issues on the descent.  There was a debrief at the parking lot and an optional traditional post-hike meal at the nearby Dru-Bru.  Another fun day adventuring!
