CHS 1 Hike - Wallace Falls & Wallace Lake Loop

10-mile Wallace Falls and Wallace Lake loop, going up the main waterfalls trail and down the Greg Ball trail.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Descriptions here are based on walking the trail to the waterfalls first and then down the Greg Ball trail for the return.

The trails are in good condition, with some improvements for water crossings in the past year. The Greg Ball trail area appears to have been impacted by a major storm with many trees down but the trail itself is clear.

The trail system is well signed and navigation was fairly straightforward. There is an area between the upper falls and the forest road above where you need to pay attention and follow the silver diamonds on the trees. Even then, the trail was easy to distinguish (easier than previous times I had been there, so maybe there's been some work done.

There is a section when approaching the lake from the forest road (when coming from the falls) that is often water logged. On this trip, that section was dry. There also appears to be some recent improvements added in the form of footbridges to assist people getting through this area.

There are not a lot of bathroom opportunities after the trailhead, especially on the trail leading to the waterfalls. After that, the next bathroom is at the base of the Greg Ball trail.

It is also worth pointing out that on weekdays you may run into an active logging area between the falls and the lake. I have never noticed activity there on the weekends, however.

On this day, the weather was clear and warm, with some sun exposure in parts but we were mostly in the shade. The temperature difference between shady and sunny spots was dramatic. The high was about 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The trail was surprisingly quiet given that this was a free Saturday for Washington State Parks.  The lot was  maybe a third full by the time we started at 8 am. It was full when we left the park at around 3pm, with many parking down the road and walking to the park.

There were some significant groupings of Columbine near the forest road portion.

One participant reported seeing a bear near Wallace Lake.
