You can do this trip by staying solely on the road which is easy to follow. It is more fun to go up on the ridge which we did. There had been fresh snow early in the week and then three days of sun. It was mushy snow on top of a compact base.
A Sno-park pemit is required. It is unikely that plowing is still happening, but the ranger said not to count on enfocement to stop. The road was bare and dry all the way and the Sno-park too. No problems parking. There were some trucks hauling snow mobiles parked near us. We didn't see them on our route. There was lots of parking accross the street too.
As there had been three days of unusually warm weather, we started with Microspikes on the road. We soon switched to snowshoes as there was plenty of snow still and snowshoes were easier. We departed the road to ascend the ridge and had views of Mt. Rainier, Adams and St. Helens in the distance. Then we returned to the road upto our lunch spot. Great views of the Stuart range. It was an amazing blue sky day.
