Basic Snowshoe - Lewis Butte

Clouds and wind and fun on the last day at Lewis Butte of the season.

  • Snow and ice on road

Before Lewis Butte closed for the season on 12/15, our Mounties group got to snowshoe to the top.  After 4-5” of fresh snowfall the night prior, we were luckily able to find a small place to park along the road and to put on snowshoes right there.  We started by being able to follow the trail, but as we got higher, it became harder to follow, so we just made our own way.

IMG_2811.jpegClouds obscured the more distant peaks, but then clouds came in and obscured all and the wind picked up.  IMG_2815.jpegAt the top, we took cover under the boughs of the one tree thankfully there.  Our break at the summit was brief due to the weather, so we followed our snowshoe trough down a ways.  IMG_2816.jpegOnce visibility improved, we took a more straight line back to the road and the car.  Back in Winthrop, some of us visited the Christmas Bazaar at the Barn.  Here is to hoping Santa brings us all more snow for Christmas!
